“I love you but I need another year” is a song about being in denial of needing help. Liza Anne recognises her symptoms but doesn’t know how to address them and tells her lover that she “just needs another year” to get herself together, scared that they’ll leave her due to her emotional turmoil.

Listening to this song, I couldn’t help but relate to the emotional struggle and the fear of being abandoned by someone you love. Liza Anne’s honest lyrics and vulnerable vocals capture the inner turmoil one feels when they are in a dark place and are afraid to burden their loved ones with their pain.

The opening verse, “I don’t think enough, Before I say too much, I’m digging my own grave, With all the shit I say,” resonated with me deeply. Sometimes, when we are overwhelmed with emotions, we tend to speak without considering the consequences of our words. We push people away, unintentionally hurting them, while simultaneously digging ourselves deeper into our own emotional graves.

The chorus, “Stay here, I know I love you but I need another year,” expresses the conflicted feelings of wanting the support of a loved one while also wanting to spare them from the burdens of our own struggles. It’s a plea for understanding and patience, a desperate attempt to hold on to a relationship while battling internal demons.

The second verse, “I’m feeling nauseous, I’ll light a cigarette, I don’t want a diagnosis, I don’t want a name to call this,” captures the sense of helplessness and avoidance that often accompanies mental health issues. Many of us, myself included, try to find temporary relief in external substances or distractions, avoiding seeking professional help or acknowledging the severity of our struggles.

The bridge, “You’re sticking around but how can you stand it? I can’t salvage your mind while I’m losing mine quick, And nobody should have to deal with this, But I need ya, I don’t wanna leave ya,” portrays the guilt and self-awareness that comes with realizing the toll our struggles can have on our loved ones. It’s a painful realization that we may not be able to fully be there for someone else while we are in the midst of our own battles.

Personally, this song hit close to home. I have experienced moments of intense emotional turmoil where I pushed away those closest to me, scared that they would be burdened by my pain. I found solace in Liza Anne’s words, knowing that I am not alone in these feelings.

It’s important to remember that seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Understanding that it’s okay to lean on others during difficult times is crucial for our own well-being and the health of our relationships. The message of this song is a reminder to reach out, to let those who love us be there for us, even when it feels like we don’t deserve it.

Liza Anne’s “I Love You, But I Need Another Year” beautifully captures the complexities of mental health struggles, the fear of abandonment, and the desperate desire for understanding. Through her raw and honest lyrics, she creates a space for listeners to feel seen and validated in their own battles. This song serves as a reminder that we are not alone and that it’s okay to ask for help.

So, let’s embrace vulnerability, reach out for support when we need it, and remember that love and understanding can coexist, even in the darkest of times.
